Cough

Most coughs are viral and clear up within 1–3 weeks.

When it's usually nothing
  • Dry or wet, but you can still speak in full sentences.
  • Warm fluids, honey (over age 1), and humid air help.
  • No fever over 102°F, no shortness of breath at rest.
When to get checked
  • Coughing up blood, or chest pain with each breath.
  • Trouble breathing, lips or fingers turning bluish.
  • Cough lasting more than 3 weeks, or high fever that won't break.

Take a breath. Let's figure this out together.
